Contributing to the global goals
Creating Shared Value (CSV) is mapped against the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We helped to shape the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and now we’re working hard to achieve them.
Supporting the 17 SDGs
In 2015, the UN launched the SDGs to focus the work of sustainability on 17 key areas that will help end poverty, improve health and tackle climate change.
Linking the SDGs with CSV and our material issues helped us look more closely at where we can have the biggest impact. Today, our sustainability strategy is carefully mapped against the 17 goals, with each commitment and impact area corresponding to one or more of them.

We joined as one of its founding patrons, and our first action is to pilot an anti-corruption in Ecuador.
The Action Platform is a two-year program bringing together business, UN agencies, civil society and governments to achieve a peaceful and inclusive society for sustainable development, the provision of effective and accountable institutions at all levels and provide justice for all. We joined because we think it’s crucial for us to help build operating environments based on strong corporate governance and rule of law – this is the foundation not just for a sustainable society, but for our success as a business as it provides the basis for certainty, long-term investment and growth.
In Ecuador, we’re working with several local players and a committed national government to advance the cause of SDG 16.5: to substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms. We will launch our initiative by creating an awareness campaign, developing strong corporate governance norms, and by proposing specific municipal regulation to combat corruption.

In 2017, we went further and integrated the SDGs into our three global initiatives: Nestlé for Healthier Kids, Nestlé needs YOUth and Caring for Water.
SDG 3 Good health and well-being
A good life from the start
By promoting good health and wellbeing, we can help people live longer, happier lives. Already, the world has made great strides in reducing childhood mortality and eliminating diseases, but there’s still a long way to go. Our scale enables us to make difference, and we believe that through nutrition, initiatives and better farming practices, we can help prevent disease and make the world a healthier place.
This goal is threaded through our six sub-impact areas and many of our 41 commitments. This includes everything from transforming our recipes to be healthier to inspiring people to choose water.
We are particularly focused on encouraging kids around the world to eat nutritious food and get active by creating new and better products, promoting education and conducting industry-leading scientific research. By 2030, our global initiative Nestlé for Healthier Kids aims to help 50?million kids lead healthier lives, and we’ve already reached 8.3?million.
SDG 8 Decent work and economic growth
Nestlé needs YOUth
Around the world, the number of workers living in extreme poverty has declined dramatically over the past 25 years. But the 2008 economic crisis has left a lasting impact on growth and inequality, and many people around the world still struggle to find decent work. We believe work should offer dignity, respect and fair pay, and as a major global employer, we’re proud of providing good jobs to hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.
Under our Communities impact area, we are focused on everything from enhancing diversity within our (already very diverse) business to providing effective grievance mechanisms for stakeholders in our supply chain.
We are especially interested in putting opportunity in the hands of young people. Through our global youth initiative, we provide youth with skills and education, offering help to young entrepreneurs and making agriculture a more prosperous sector for young people. Our goal is to help 10?million young people access economic opportunities by 2030.
SDG 6 Clean water and sanitation
Water is essential to life and to our business
Water scarcity affects more than 40% of people around the world, and that number is increasing. Water is the planet’s most precious resource and a fundamental human right. It’s also essential to our business, for our bottled water, the crops grown by our suppliers and the processes used to manufacture our products.
Falling under the sub-impact area Caring for water, four of our commitments are directly related to this goal. We have developed our global initiative, Caring for Water, an integrated approach to promoting good water stewardship across our business.
Our global efforts to improve our environmental performance involve stewarding water resources for future generations. We focus on reducing withdrawals, reusing water and working with others to protect water at a catchment or community level. This way, we aim to increase access to safe water and sanitation.
