Building, sharing and applying nutrition knowledge

Nutrition can be used to help prevent and, in some cases, treat or prevent disease. Some conditions, like obesity, type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s, have common physiological factors that can be affected and addressed by nutrition. Through our global network of research centers, our scientists are discovering more about how people eat, and how Nestlé’s foods and beverages can help those with food-related medical conditions.

Creating shared value...

For society

As we learn more about the links between nutrition and disease, we can help advance society’s understanding of how to treat or prevent some conditions.

For our business

Staying at the cutting edge of nutritional science enables us to create better products that will also contribute to the health and wellbeing of our consumers.

Our approach

We aim to help people live longer, healthier lives by building understanding and sharing knowledge about the role nutrition can play in preventing disease. We’re constantly looking to learn more about how nutrition, combined with active lifestyles, can support good living across all generations. To do this, we conduct long-term studies into eating habits, collaborate with leading universities, research organizations and start-ups, and continually improve our products.

Why it matters

Some conditions, like obesity, type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s, have common physiological factors that can be affected by, but also addressed through, nutrition. Food-related allergies and intolerances are also increasingly common. By building and sharing nutrition knowledge we can help more people live longer, healthier lives.

Our contribution

We’re constantly looking to learn more about how nutrition, combined with active lifestyles, can support health across all generations.

We use the findings from our long-term studies into the eating habits of infants and children, for instance, as well as collaborations with leading universities, research organizations and start-ups, to improve our products and services. In 2018, we invested CHF 1.7 billion in our research activities.

We also share our findings to further the cause of addressing some of today’s key nutrition challenges. In 2018, the Nestlé Nutrition Institute shared our learning with health professionals, scientists and nutrition communities through 10 publications and 86 conference presentations.

Our work on building, sharing and applying nutrition knowledge contributes to SDGs 2, 3, 10 and 17.
