Promoting healthy behaviors in children

children under 5 years of age are considered overweight or obese, and are stunted due to under-nutrition. Adopting good nutrition practices from an early age gives children a better chance of growing up fit and well. We use public health data and our own research to inform our products and services; in turn, these give parents, caregivers and teachers the tools and advice they need to keep kids active and healthy.

Our approach

What we eat early in life makes a big difference to our future health, so we’re encouraging six habits in kids and families that we think will make a big difference: feed your baby like a baby, eat nutritious and varied options, choose water, manage portions, play and be active, and enjoy meals together.

What we are doing

We’re really focused on making a difference to kids’ lives, and we made good progress in 2018.

By 2018

Maintain existing Nestlé Healthy Kids Global Programs, while measuring their impact on children based on five globally defined goals: eat nutritious and diverse meals, manage portions, choose water, play and be active, and maintain good hygiene habits.

Our result: 9.6 million parents in over 50 countries are currently registered with Nestlé Start Healthy Stay Healthy.

By 2020

Support 50 million children through our nutrition education and behavior change programs, an important milestone toward our wider 2030 ambition.

Our result: 29 million children reached by Nestlé for Healthier Kids programs in 86 countries around the world.

Nestlé for Healthier Kids

Our flagship global initiative is Nestlé for Healthier Kids, which aims to support 50 million children to lead healthier lives by 2030. The initiative is wide-ranging, and includes nutrition education for families, product innovation and behavior change programs, such as Start Healthy Stay Healthy, Choose Water and our Good Nutrition program, to name a few.

Fostering healthy habits in Russia

Seven-year-old Mikhail, from Moscow, is one of 8 million children to benefit from Nestlé Russia’s award-winning Good Nutrition program. Running for nearly two decades, the initiative complements the school curriculum with 120 hours of additional nutrition education, provided over three years. Using materials created in partnership with the Institute of Developmental Physiology, one of the teachers involved, Irina Viktorovna Kazarina, promotes the six habits defined by the Nestlé for Healthier Kids global program.

Today, 60 regions of Russia are participating in the program, covering 78% of the country. A complement to the existing national curriculum, it gives kids 120 hours of additional nutrition education over the course of three years.

Using insights from Russia’s Institute of Developmental Physiology and Nestlé’s own extensive research into nutrition, the program promotes the six healthy habits that we believe lead to healthy lives. It does this through a range of educational tools and activities, as well as creating educational materials in partnership with the Institute of Developmental Physiology.

We’ve already reached 8 million kids, and we look forward to helping more.
